Cashew nut also known as snack nuts is the number one non oil foreign earner for Nigeria. The cashew industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the global market. Currently, the market is valued at $7.57 billion and there is a projection that the market would grow to be $8.91 billion in 2028. Now, aside from adding funds to the economy, there are other benefits that cashew nuts offer.

A cashew nut can be divided into two parts; the kernel and the shell. Both the kernel and the shell are important and beneficial. Today we will be looking at the benefits of cashew nuts(both the kernel and shell)

Benefits Of Cashew Nuts (Kernel)

  1. Cashew Nuts are rich in nutrients that are useful to the body. They are rich in vitamins(such as vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin E to mention but a few) They are also rich in essential minerals like zinc, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and so on.
  2. Weight management: Despite being calorie-dense, cashews can be a valuable addition to a weight management plan. The combination of healthy fats, protein, and fiber in cashews can help promote a feeling of fullness and reduce overall calorie intake.
  3. Antioxidant properties: Cashews contain antioxidants, such as vitamin E and various phytochemicals, which help protect cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. This may contribute to a reduced risk of chronic diseases and aging-related issues.
  4. Blood sugar control: Some studies suggest that cashews may help regulate blood sugar levels, potentially benefiting individuals with diabetes or those at risk of developing the condition. The fiber and protein in cashews can slow down the absorption of sugar in the bloodstream.
  5. Eye health: Cashews contain antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin, which are associated with promoting eye health and reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration.
  6. Skin health: The vitamins and minerals in cashews, particularly vitamin E and zinc, can contribute to healthy skin by supporting collagen production, protecting against UV damage, and preventing skin disorders.

Benefits of Cashew Nut Shell

As established earlier, the cashew nut shell has some usefulness despite the fact that it cannot be consumed and if not handled with care, it can cause skin irritation.

Some of the benefits are highlighted below;

  1. Cashew Shell Oil: Cashew shell oil is extracted from the shells, and it is sometimes used in industrial applications. This oil can be used as a lubricant, in brake linings, and in the production of paints and varnishes. It is also used in the manufacture of some types of explosives.
  2. Biological Pest Control: Some research has explored the potential use of cashew shell extracts in pest control. The compounds in cashew shells may have insecticidal properties, which could be utilized in agricultural pest management.
  3. Energy Production: Cashew shells can be used as a source of energy. They can be burned as a biofuel or used to generate heat for industrial processes.
  4. Crafts and Decorations: In some regions, crafters and artisans use cashew shells for creative projects. They can be shaped and decorated to create jewelry, ornaments, and other decorative items.
  5. Composting: Cashew shells can be added to compost piles as a carbon-rich “brown” material to help balance the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio in compost, aiding in the decomposition process.

We cannot deny the fact that cashew is very beneficial both to the economy as well as the health of an individual(cashew should in fact be added to all meal plans).
